ABOUT US

I am very pleased to be able to deliver a comprehensive eyecare service to Queenstown and surrounding Central Otago locations.

I personally bring 32 years of surgical experience with over 30,000 eye operations, to this region. But more than that, I bring the vast wealth of eyecare skills across all areas of Ophthalmology with my alliance with my Specialist colleagues at Auckland Eye. This allows visiting services including Oculoplastics (eyelid, and around the eye skin problems including cosmetic procedures such as blepharoplasty) and Medical and Vitreoretinal consultations.

Specifically, what you can expect from Southern Lakes Eye Care and Surgery is:

  • No Needle/ No Stitch Topical Anaesthesia Cataract surgery

  • A painless 6 Minute or less Lens replacement (Cataract) surgical procedure

  • Immediate vision post surgery– No Eye patch

  • Rapid visual recovery. Good vision in most cases on Day 1

  • Comprehensive subspecialist support from Auckland Eye

  • The opportunity of same day surgery for both eyes

  • Extensive experience in advanced visual outcomes to reduce dependency on glasses for all distances and tasks.

  • Extensive experience in clinical research ensuring my advice is broad and well considered (please see my CV)

  • A regular 2-week follow-up service available (on occasion this may extend to 3-4 weeks)

  • Experienced local Optometric support. Queenstown/Wanaka/Cromwell/Alexandra

  • Modern Surgical suite at Southern Cross Surgical Centre equipped with latest surgical devices for optimal patient care during lans replacement (cataract) surgery.

  • Local support from my personal optometrist in Queenstown

  • A fully equipped dedicated eye clinic in Queenstown with the latest devices for optimal accuracy of diagnosis and outcomes:

    • Zeiss IOL Master 700 biometer

    • Nidek YAG and SLT Laser System

    • Oculus Keratograph K5 corneal diagnostics

    • Zeiss Cirrus 6000 OCT

    • High Resolution Anterior Segment photography

  • Effective Dry Eye treatment utilizing the Optilight IPL system

    • Based on the success of treating dry eye in Auckland I am excited to introduce this service to Central Lakes, where the problem is even more prevalent and problematic due to the low humidity of the climate

    • This latest technology utilizes a unique patented light delivery system to treat dry eye at its root cause, rather than a “band-aid” approach such as eyedrops.

    • Access even further approaches through the association with Auckland Eye (AB Max and Rexon)

Things to consider:

  • Anaesthetist support for your eye surgery.

    • This means that no intravenous sedation will be supplied at the time of your surgery. Having undertaken surgery on 1000’s of patients I do not envisage this a hurdle of any size except in extreme situations (Phobias and extreme anxiety)

    • If a life threatening non eye related event occurred during or around the time of surgery, we would rely on the Queenstown emergency services to provide support care

  • Immediate subspecialist support to manage rare surgical complications (occurring frequency less than 1:300)

    • In a large center such as Auckland it may be occasionally possible to complete a complicated surgery on the same day. More often a secondary intervention would occur within a short number of days.

    • In Queenstown a complication under my care requiring a further procedure would best be managed with a flight to Auckland (flying would not be any additional risk) to access the highest standards of care at Auckland Eye

    • In this eventuality, the cost associated with further surgery would be funded by health insurance or further personal costs, this includes all surgical and transport expenses.

    • An alternative is to access local emergency services in the Public Sector via Dunedin, Invercargill, or Christchurch
