SUFFERING FROM DRY, ITCHY, RED OR BURNING EYES?

UNDERSTANDING DRY EYES

Dry Eye disease is particularly prevalent in the Otago region due to the low humidity of the environment. Managing dry eye with lubricating drops is no longer considered to be the best approach as it does not address the underlying cause of the dry eye. Approaching the problem from a “root cause” approach with the mainstay of this being intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment offers an interventional means to change the natural history of this extremely problematic and unpleasant condition.

At Southern Lakes Eye Care and Surgery we have advanced diagnostic equipment including:

  • High resolution anterior segment photography

  • Corneal and dry eye diagnostics using the Oculus Keratograph K5

  • Cirrus 6000 OCT including Corneal module for Corneal Epithelial thickness analysis.

  • Permanent radio frequency lash removal for misdirected lashes- frequently associated with dry eye disease.

Therapeutic approaches are used to manage dry eye including the latest iteration of IPL- (intense pulsed light) and multiple options for improve tear volume using punctual occlusion.

The Optilight system is the only one of its kind in the South Island and follows the strong tradition of the Lumenis M22 IPL system – The only FDA approved treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). We are now for the first time able to effectively treat the upper lid for MGD with improved symptomatic relief.

The treatment follows the Toyos Protocol with a minimum of 4 sessions of treatment 2-6 weeks apart. Each session takes about 30 mins and is very well tolerated. Patients are able to drive afterwards.
